Halloween Safety Tips That Every Parent Should Consider

Halloween is a fun and interesting time for both children and parents. However, there are some essential and important safety tips that are well worth considering as a way to keep everyone safe during this special and engaging time of year. For example, parents should instruct children to never walk near an open flame or lit candles that may be encountered while trick-or-treating. As an added safety measure, it is worth the effort to ensure that all costumes are always flame resistant.

Houses That Are Dark

Equally important is to ensure that children do not enter a home unless they know the adults at the house they are visiting. Children should also be instructed to not stop at houses that are dark or that do not have a light turned on. It should also go without saying that children should never accept a ride from a stranger when trick-or-treating. As an added safety measure, children should be taught the importance of knowing what is safe to eat when venturing out on Halloween night.

Poorly Fitted Costumes

For example, factory wrapped type candies and treats are considered safe. Candy and treats that are homemade or not properly wrapped should be suspect and avoided especially when the source of these candies is unknown. Another major concern with regard to costumes is that they should be fitted correctly. This is an essential aspect of safety in that it allows children to see clearly when walking along the street. Poorly fitted costumes can reduce vision considerably. Even poorly fitted shoes can result in a slip and fall related injuries.

Looking Both Ways Before Crossing A Road

Finally, children should be encouraged to only walk on sidewalks when they are available. When there is no sidewalk it is best to walk on the far edge of the road while always facing traffic. Other common pedestrian safety precautions should be encouraged as well. This includes looking both ways before crossing a road. Taking full advantage of crosswalks when they are available is always the best option when preparing to cross a road or intersection. Bringing a flashlight along when trick-or-treating is an excellent safety precaution too. A flashlight is useful because it allows others to see trick-or-treaters and it allows trick-or-treaters to see where they are going.
