Safe Driving Plans for Thanksgiving Holiday

November 15, 2016 Hastings and Hastings

Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching and more people will be on the road heading to their favorite holiday destinations. During these holiday travel seasons, the number of accidents increases, both due to the larger amount of traffic and the fact many people are driving in unfamiliar territory. However, there are steps you can take to drive more safely and ensure a more enjoyable holiday season.

Avoid the Busiest Times

Most people don’t enjoy driving in heavy traffic. With heavy traffic comes more people who are irritable and are more likely to engage in risky driving behavior. While it isn’t always possible, consider saving your drive for off-peak days or times. Not only will you feel more relaxed driving on emptier roadways, but you will encounter fewer drivers who may also be stressed.

Give Your Car a Checkup

Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained cars. You may feel too busy to take these extra steps around the holidays, but it will greatly decrease your chances you will become involved in an accident that could have been avoided or your car will break down. A few simple checks, such as oil levels, tire pressure, fan belts and other fluid levels, can help save you a lot of headaches over the course of your trip, helping you drive more safely as an end result.

Get Plenty of Rest

You may spend a lot of time prepping for Thanksgiving, even if you aren’t the one doing all the cooking, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your regular care. Getting plenty of sleep, especially before a long road trip, will help you feel more alert and ensure you reach your destination safely. If you are putting in a lot of miles over the Thanksgiving weekend, consider bringing another driver along to help reduce some of the strain.

Pack Extra Supplies

Extra supplies won’t protect you from an accident, but it can be helpful if you are involved in one or if your car breaks down. Pack bottled water, some food and even some blankets so you and your family can stay safe and warm until help arrives. Be sure your car is equipped with a roadside emergency kit, as well as a first aid kit, in the event of an emergency.

No one likes to think about the possibility of becoming involved in a car accident or having their car break down while on their way to a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, but it can happen. However, if you follow these tips, you will greatly increase your chances of a safe and happy holiday!
