Perhaps one of the best approaches to avoiding the negative effects of drowsy driving is to simply plan trips with another driver. Having a companion when driving can greatly reduce the chances of being involved in a drowsy driving related accident. A second driver in a car can take over if the primary driver becomes exceedingly tired. In addition, having a second driver in a vehicle provides added redundancy. Being able to determine whether or not the primary driver is losing judgment and basic driving skills can save the day.

Level Of Alertness

Finally, taking frequent breaks and stopping at least every 100 miles can help to improve levels of safety. From stopping to use the restroom to stopping for a coffee break, frequent stops make smart sense in terms of improving safety. Drivers may even consider stopping at a rest area and taking a short 15-minute nap. In many instances a short nap can greatly improve one’s level of alertness.
